Density and specific gravity have very similar, but not quite identical definitions.

Density is the mass of material per unit volume.

Specific gravity is a ratio of the mass of a material to the mass of an equal volume of water at 4 oC. Because specific gravity is a ratio, it is a unitless quantity. For example, the specific gravity of water at 4 oC is 1.0 while its density is 1.0 gcm-3.
